The European Union’s enlargement policy gained new momentum as a result of the Russian aggression against Ukraine. However, the granting of candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine has raised questions about the future of EU enlargement policy. This is all the more so as there are a number of countries on the road to membership, primarily from the Western Balkans, awaiting real progress. The aim of the meeting will be to discuss the EU’s enlargement policy in the context of North Macedonia and Moldova – two multi-ethnic countries with similar population potential that face similar challenges in the area of identity politics and the fight against corruption. The participants in the discussion will try to answer the questions:

  • Is the EU capable of pursuing a coherent and consistent policy towards candidates for membership?
  • Do the vested interests of member states undermine the EU’s enlargement policy?
  • To what extent does the relationship with the EU influence the political processes in North Macedonia and Moldova?
  • What role does the idea of European integration play in local politics?
