In the third year of the full-scale war in Ukraine and with uncertainty surrounding the continuation of current U.S. policies after the upcoming presidential elections in the fall, the European Union faces new challenges in conducting a common defense and security policy. Donald Tusk and Emmanuel Macron, among others, have proposed several new initiatives in this area. How did public opinion in Central Europe react to them? What implications does this reaction have for political decision-makers? In which direction should the European Union proceed? These are the fundamental questions we will seek to address during the panel, beginning with a presentation of public opinion research results from eight Central European countries, conducted by the Institute of Central Europe in 2024.
