Together with the “Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN” Centre and the HistoriaBEZKITU.pl portal, we invite you to another event in the “W Bramie o książce” series, devoted to Emil Marat’s book Bratny. Hamlet rozstrzelany (Wydawnictwo Czarne, Wołowiec 2024).

Date: 17 April 2026, 6:00 p.m.
Venue: Sala Czarna, “Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN” Centre, ul. Grodzka 21, Lublin

The meeting will be moderated by Agnieszka Jaczyńska (teacher, educator, HistoriaBEZKITU.pl portal).

In public perception, Roman Bratny is best known as the author of Kolumbowie—a novel that for decades shaped the image of the Warsaw Uprising and the wartime generation of young people in their twenties. Emil Marat, however, takes a broader look at the writer’s entire body of work—extensive, diverse, and often surprising. He highlights both its strengths and its weaker moments, when Bratny seemed to question the very myth he had helped create.

The book takes the reader through the successive stages of the writer’s life: from his early beliefs and wartime experiences, through his postwar ideological choices, to his later years in the realities of the Polish People’s Republic. It is the story of a writer deeply entangled in history—shaped by it, yet also seeking to interpret and influence how it is understood.

Bratny. Hamlet rozstrzelany is a multifaceted biography that presents not only the writer, but also the person—friend, brother, and father—along with his choices, contradictions, and place in twentieth-century Polish culture.

Emil Marat (b. 1971) is a writer and journalist, author of Szkło (2013) and Studnie Norymbergi (2021), and co-author (with Michał Wójcik) of, among others, Ptaki drapieżne (2016) and Wojna nadejdzie jutro (2019). He has received and been nominated for numerous prestigious literary and historical awards. Bratny forms part of a trilogy devoted to the “Kolumbowie” generation.

A recording of the event will be available on the YouTube channel of the “Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN” Centre.
The even will be held in Polish.
