Discussion on the essay “Dwie ojczyzny, dwa patriotyzmy” at the Arnold Szyfman Polish Theatre in Warsaw

The Institute of Central Europe invites you to a discussion devoted to Jan Józef Lipski and his influential essay Dwie ojczyzny, dwa patriotyzmy. The event will take place on 24 March at 7:00 p.m. at the Arnold Szyfman Polish Theatre in Warsaw.

The starting point for the discussion will be the latest edition of Lipski’s essay, published by the Institute of Central Europe in the Biblioteka IEŚ series, with an extensive introduction by Jarosław Kurski. The text first appeared 45 years ago in the Paris-based journal Kultura. In the year marking the centenary of the author’s birth, it returns as an important voice in the debate on the character of Polish patriotism. Writing about its two faces—one marked by megalomania and xenophobia—Lipski emphasized that

under no circumstances should we abandon those who are intoxicated by xenophobia and national megalomania (…) The struggle over the shape of Polish patriotism will be decisive for the fate of our nation—its moral, cultural, and political future. [The editor’s own translation.]

The panel discussion will feature Dr. Łukasz Garbal, Prof. Andrzej Friszke, Jarosław Kurski, and Prof. Robert Traba.

We warmly invite you to attend.
