Jan Józef Lipski’s “Dwie ojczyzny, dwa patriotyzmy” in the Biblioteka IEŚ Series

Jan Józef Lipski’s “Dwie ojczyzny, dwa patriotyzmy” in the Biblioteka IEŚ Series

The essay Dwie ojczyzny, dwa patriotyzmy by Jan Józef Lipski has been published by the Institute of Central Europe as part of the Biblioteka IEŚ series, with an extensive introduction by Jarosław Kurski.

The text was first published 45 years ago in the Paris-based Kultura and remains one of the most important contributions to the debate on Polish identity, responsibility, and the nature of patriotism. In the year marking the centenary of the author’s birth, we revisit his reflection as both timely and inspiring. Writing about the two faces of Polish patriotism—one open and community-oriented, the other closed and marked by megalomania and xenophobia—Lipski emphasized that

under no circumstances should we abandon those who are intoxicated by xenophobia and national megalomania (…) The struggle over the shape of Polish patriotism will be decisive for the fate of our nation—its moral, cultural, and political future. [The editor’s own translation.]

The new edition of the essay is accompanied by an extensive introduction by Jarosław Kurski, who places the text in both historical and contemporary contexts, highlighting its relevance for today’s public debate.
