“Tadeusz Mazowiecki – the Last Intellectual in Polish Politics”. A meeting at the House of Words in Lublin

“Tadeusz Mazowiecki – the Last Intellectual in Polish Politics”. A meeting at the House of Words in Lublin

On 11 February at 5:00 p.m., we invite you to the House of Words (Dom Słów, ul. Żmigród 1, Lublin) for a meeting dedicated to Tadeusz Mazowiecki, one of the most important figures in Poland’s contemporary history.

The event will be divided into two parts. First, we will hear a lecture by Wojciech Samoliński entitledPolitics According to Tadeusz Mazowiecki.” Afterwards, we will be joined by red. Wojciech Mazowiecki for a conversation, including a discussion of the new book 📖 Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Pisma i dokumenty. Raporty z Jugosławii 1992–1995.

“Raporty z Jugosławii” (“Reports from Yugoslavia), written by Tadeusz Mazowiecki in his role as a UN Special Rapporteur, were published a few months ago to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. Protesting against the UN’s inaction and the helplessness of the international community—which contributed to this tragedy—Mazowiecki made the unprecedented decision to resign as Special Rapporteur. His reports remain an important source for research into the history of the conflict, persecution, and atrocities following the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Free copies of Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Pisma i dokumenty. Raporty z Jugosławii 1992–1995, as well as Tadeusz Mazowiecki’s Raporty z Jugosławii will be distributed among participants.

Wojciech Mazowiecki is a journalist, publicist, and media manager. He is also a son of Poland’s first post-war non-communist prime minister, Tadeusz Mazowiecki. In 1989, he took part in preparing his father’s historic parliamentary address. He began his professional career at Gazeta Wyborcza, where he worked as editorial secretary and head of the business section, and later held a managerial position at Agora.

Wojciech Samoliński was an active member of the anti-communist opposition in the 1970s and 1980s. He graduated from the Faculty of Production Economics at the University of Gdańsk and studied Christian philosophy at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL). In 1976–1977, he collaborated with KOR. He edited and printed many independent publications and was among the editors of the journal Spotkania. From the outset, he was associated with the “Solidarity” movement. In democratic Poland (1990–1992), he served as a spokesperson for the Voivodeship Office in Lublin. He was a member of the “Unia Wolności” (“Freedom Union”) party until 2002, and since 1994 he has been a co-owner of a publishing and printing company.

Event organisers: House of Words (Dom Słów); the Institute of Central Europe; HistoriaBEZKITU.pl; and the University of Warsaw Press.
