Building resilient schools – safety and adaptability in times of crisis

Building resilient schools – safety and adaptability in times of crisis

How can schools become more resilient and keep students, teachers and staff safe in the face of today’s challenges, including armed conflict? These questions were addressed at the conference “Crisis Management, Safety and Resilience in Schools”, held on 28 October at Juliusz Słowacki Primary School No. 3 in Lublin. Participants included Grzegorz Gil, PhD, Director of the Institute of Central Europe (IEŚ), and Minister Jakub Stefaniak. The Institute of Central Europe served as the event’s patron.

The conference provided an opportunity to discuss the role of education in building societal resilience, preparing schools for emergencies, and strengthening the psychological safety and well-being of students and teachers.

The programme featured an opening lecture by Agnieszka Lichnerowicz entitled “Resilience: Adapting to Turbulent Times and Seizing the Opportunities of a New Era”, followed by a presentation by Grzegorz Gil, PhD, entitled “Resilient Schools, Prepared Cities: Education in the Face of New Challenges and Changing Approaches to Adaptation”.

Other presentations focused on safety education in Lublin’s schools and ways to strengthen school communities in the shadow of war. Participants also discussed how schools could prepare for emergencies and reinforce key elements of safety in the context of armed conflict.

The conference concluded with parallel workshops, which gave participants the opportunity to explore selected topics in greater depth and discuss practical approaches to strengthening resilience and safety in school communities.
