Dr Damian Szacawa, Head of the Nordic-Baltic Team at the Institute of Central Europe, provided media commentary on Iceland’s referendum concerning the resumption of accession negotiations with the European Union.
He appeared on TOK FM in the programmes “European Magazine” and “Let Me Ask Differently”, as well as on RMF FM and Polish Radio. He analysed the reasons why Icelanders rejected the proposal to resume negotiations with Brussels and the potential consequences of the outcome.
In his comments, Dr Szacawa highlighted the deep divisions within Icelandic society over EU membership, the importance of the fisheries sector, and concerns about losing control over one of the key sectors of the Icelandic economy. He also pointed to the geopolitical dimension of the debate and the prospects for Iceland’s future relations with the European Union.
