On 14–15 October 2026, the international academic congress “Embracing the New, Preserving the Old: Studying Fascism, Communism, and Totalitarianism in the 2020s” was held at the Pilecki Institute in Warsaw. The event focused on contemporary research into fascism, communism, and totalitarianism. The Institute of Central Europe (IEŚ) in Lublin was a partner of the congress and co-organised one of its discussion panels.
IEŚ was represented by Dr Anton Saifullayeu, Deputy Director for Research and Analysis; Dr Agata Tatarenko, Head of the Visegrad Plus Team; Dr Bartłomiej Krzysztan; and Andrzej Koma.
The Institute co-organised the panel “Rethinking the Soviet Past and Post-Sovietness: New Analytical Frameworks”, which explored new perspectives and methodological approaches to research on the Soviet past and the post-Soviet space. The discussion focused on critically reassessing existing interpretations of the Soviet legacy and exploring new analytical frameworks.
The congress provided a platform for in-depth academic debate, the exchange of ideas and experiences, and engagement with diverse research perspectives. During the event, IEŚ also showcased its publications. Participants had an opportunity to explore the Institute’s publishing output and receive selected publications.
